10 Fuel Efficiency Tips for your Vehicle:

Most of us need a vehicle to get to work, pick up the kids from school or to do our grocery shopping. All of that driving adds up over time. Here are some excellent tips to help conserve fuel, save money and the environment all at once:

1) Drive Carefully - Speeding and rapid acceleration/braking wastes up to 33 percent of fuel on the highway and about 5 percent with city driving. Driving more sensibly can save you a lot of money and fuel over time.

2) Follow the Speed Limit - While each car varies, fuel efficiency decreases around 60 mph. Generally, for each 5mph you drive over 60mph, you can expect to pay around $.20 more per gallon.

3) Remove unneeded weight - Carrying around extra weight in your vehicle wastes fuel. For every 100 pounds of extra weight, you can expect to lose around 2% efficiency.

4) Use Overdrive - If your car is equipped with overdrive, use it when your car reaches its cruising speed. When you use overdrive, your car's engine speed goes down which saves gas and reduces engine wear.

5) Keep your tires inflated and aligned - Your gas mileage can be improved just by keeping your tires inflated to manufacturer’s specifications and with periodic tire alignments.

6) Have your car tuned up on schedule - Not only can worn spark plugs and low transmission fluid shorten the life of your engine, you'll also spend more money on fuel. Tune ups improve gas mileage and performance.

7) Avoid idling your engine - If you're waiting in your car for an extended period of time, turn off your engine. Idling burns more gas than restarting the engine.

8) Use cruise control - Using cruise control on the highway maintains a constant speed and in most cases saves money.

9) Warming up the Engine - During cold periods, warm up the engine for no more than 30 seconds. Your engine will warm up quicker on the road and you won't waste any more fuel than you need to.

10) Carpool or take the bus - There may be days where you don't need your car. Coordinate with your coworkers and carpool to save gas or take the bus. Not only does this save fuel, but it reduces wear and tear and will increase your vehicles longevity
